True devotion to the saints consists in our love and that we seek from the saints an “example from their way of life, fellowship in their communion, and help by their intercession”.
True devotion flourishes when we grow in this love which will be for our own good and to the greater and ultimate good of the Church.
True devotion helps us when we seek from the saint the strength to follow their example.
True devotion is strong when we pray intercessory prayers to guard us against the pressures that threaten us.
And so here is an example of a true “devotee” of St. Joseph, emphasizing love in action, an internal belief that leads to exterior results. The exterior acts of prayer and petition are motivated in some way or other by internal love. Thus our prayer leads to an action in imitation of St. Joseph in acceptance of God’s will, and it is genuine….
What precise form our love will take must be left to our own state of life, and to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit according to the way in which our individual talents in the spiritual order will tend to express themselves. As is typical of us as human beings our admiration and our love will tend to express themselves by imitation. Reverend Francis L. Filas, S.J.
