The Holy Name of “Jesus” signifies “Savior”. It was not given to Him by Mary or by Joseph, or even by the Archangel Gabriel. The Angel was merely the bearer of a message from God, when he pronounced to Mary that the Child to be born of her was to be called “Jesus”, as also when he appeared to St. Joseph in his sleep, saying: “Fear not to take unto thee Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit , and she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, For He shall save His people from their sins”. (Matt. 1:20,21)
Jesus is the Son of the Eternal Father; to the Eternal Father, therefore, it belonged to impose the name; and yet He commissioned St. Joseph to exercise the right in His place. St. Bernard teaches that the Holy Name of Jesus is the one, real Name of the Word Made Flesh, adding: “This is His Name from all eternity. By nature He is the Savior: this Name is inborn to Jesus, not given by a creature, human or Angelic”.
