And they came with haste; and they found Mary and Joseph, and the Infant lying in a manger. And seeing, they understood of the word that had been spoken to them concerning this Child. And all that heard, wondered; and at those things that were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart”. Luke 2: 9-19
The shepherd’s visit was a source of intense happiness to Mary and Joseph, because it was a recognition and an honoring of the Divine Child and Its Mother, and that HE was already beginning His mission of mercy.. St. Joseph presented the shepherds to Mary and through her to Jesus. He instructed them concerning the mission of Jesus Christ, who was to save His people. In this way did St. Joseph complete the heavenly message which the shepherds had received from the angels. He then taught those simple men not by words alone, but by deeds as well, showing them how they were to adore the new-born Babe. Because of this, the shepherds returned “glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen”.
